We Couldn’t Afford Cable TV… and It Changed the Way We Designed Our Home
When my wife and I first got married, money was tight—so tight we couldn’t even afford cable TV.
Instead of winding down with shows every night, we found other ways to connect. We played games, hosted friends, read books, cleaned the kitchen together, and—most importantly—talked. It became our rhythm, and we loved it. For a while, we promised ourselves that when money wasn’t so tight, we’d finally get cable.
Eventually, that day came. I got a raise. It would’ve been so easy to finally say yes to cable TV. But the next morning, while out on a run, I had this gut feeling: Don’t do it.
So, we didn’t.
A couple weeks later, my wife brought it up: “I know you got that raise, but I don’t think we should get cable.” I smiled and told her I’d already come to the same conclusion. We’d both realized something important—something that stuck with us for the first 12 years of our marriage and throughout our kids’ younger years.
We never did get cable. We still don’t even have Netflix.
TV just isn’t a central part of our lives—and our home reflects that choice.
Without a television in the main living area, our home naturally encourages conversation, connection, and face-to-face time. We’ve created an environment that supports the kind of life we want to live—not just the default one that’s common or convenient.
Not paying for cable allows for more personal connection and face-to-face time.
By foregoing cable, we make more space in our home and life for adventure.
Design Your Home Around Your Values
This is what intentional home design is all about.
At Bluerock, we’re not just building beautiful homes—we’re helping families design spaces that actually support the way they want to live.
That might mean:
A home gym to cut down on commutes and stay consistent with your workouts.
A functional, closed-door office to boost focus if you work remotely.
A wide-open kitchen and dining space that invites the whole family to slow down and gather.
Thoughtful design isn’t just about luxury—it’s about function. And when your home is designed with your lifestyle in mind, everything feels easier, more aligned, and more enjoyable.
A Real-Life Example: The Northridge Home Remodel & Addition
We recently worked with a family who felt stuck. Every house they toured had too many bedrooms or an awkward layout—and none of them worked for their goal: to host big family gatherings.
They didn’t need more rooms. They needed more room—more shared space where extended family could come together for holidays, birthdays, and Sunday dinners.
So we helped them redesign their home.
They expanded the main floor, nearly doubling the size of the kitchen, dining, and family room.
Now, they host dinner every Sunday with their extended family. Everyone fits comfortably, and no one’s crammed or eating on their lap. Hosting went from stressful to seamless.

Build the Life You Want—One Room at a Time
The way your home is designed can either support your daily life—or work against it.
At Bluerock, we believe no two families live the same way, so no two homes should be designed the same way. As a custom home builder in Utah, we work with clients to create homes that reflect their real priorities and values—not just what looks good in a magazine.
If you're dreaming about a home that fits your life—not just a standard floor plan—I’d love to talk.
Let’s build something meaningful, together.
